Responsibility

Stobart Group is proud of its environmental record and the rewards it reaps for customers, the business, and all our futures. By size, Eddie Stobart already has the best vehicle utilisation record in the business. The company is constantly striving to improve that efficiency across the board through even better fleet utilisation, more efficient driving practices and innovative alternatives to road transport. 95% of the Eddie Stobart fleet already complies with stringent new Euro 4/5 exhaust emmission environmental standards that significantly cut road pollution and damaging particulate release.

Efficiency through Shared Use

Driven by its shared user model, Eddie Stobart has achieved a 10% annual reduction in empty running over the last five years, cutting wasteful empty miles by 50% overall. The industry-leading utilisation figure currently stands at 85% loaded miles. For every 1% of increased Eddie Stobart fleet utilisation, carbon emissions are reduced by 1,107 tonnes.

From Road to Rail

Stobart Rail's successful freight trains represent a major positive environmental development. Each year, compared to road transport, rail-bourne goods handled by Stobart Group result in:

* 33.8 million fewer road miles travelled by trucks.

* 22,400 fewer tonnes of harnful CO2 emissions.

* 20% reduction in total Group fuel usage.

* Less congestion on Britain's crowded roads.

Better Driving Practices

Stobart's intensive SAFED driver training programme, coupled with advanced in-cab electronic monitoring of driving technique. Optimal driving performance is automatically recorded and rewarded through a driver incentive scheme where drivers benefit directly from the best practice with increased pay. As a result, Eddie Stobart will achieve one of the best 44 tonne gross fuel consumption records in the business.

Revolutionary Spanish Rail Service

2009 saw the launch of a new chilled service between southern Spain and the UK, this train will run three times a week by the end of 2010. When the service is extended to three trains per week, compared to road transport it will save a staggering:

  • 17.76 million road kilometres per annum.
  • 16,506 tonnes of CO2 emmissions per annum.

Innovative Environmental Trailer

Stobart has proposed a unique solution to significantly reducing pollution, whilst cutting the number of haulage vehicles on Britain's hard-pressed roads and actually reducing road damage..all without increasing fuel consumption! The new trailer, which features an articulated axle, can carry up to 13% more goods. The ground breaking design has been exclusively tested for Stobart by MIRA, confirming that it is fully compliant with current legislation on turning circles, despite the slighlty increased length.

Investing in the Fuel of the Future

Stobart Group has recently taken a controlling interest in a new venture with A.W Jenkinson Forest Products, the UK's leading supplier of Biomass Fuels. Use of Biomass is a key element in the UK Government's strategy to increase power generation using cleaner renewable energy sources and is targeted to make up 25% of total energy needs by 2020.

Positive about Recycling

Stobart Group places strong emphasis on recycling in all its operations. Even the five Truck Washes that keep the Eddie Stobart Fleet immaculate recycle their water.

Consolidation for Efficiency

Reduction of waste is a core operating principal throughout the Stobart Group. It underpins the Company's business model and is driven by innovations, such as the Group's network of Cross-Docks, which enable a wide range of chilled produce to be consolidated into mixed loads for delivery direct to retail sites therefore reducing road miles.

Fewer, Friendlier Miles

Stobart Group is working in partnership with the leading names in UK retail to reduce the number of deliveries and road miles using advanced planning systems and by making deliveries at less congested times of the day.
